As our society and culture move further away from our Christian heritage and values we will have occasion, perhaps many, to ask questions such as, “How do we as Christians live faithfully in this world?” or “How do we live in the world, but not of the world?” or “What should I do when the law tells me to do this, but God tells me to do that?” In our passage this week, from Romans 13:1-7, Paul addresses our relationship as believers with the governing authorities. Whilst we are “not to be conformed to this world,” the gospel of grace […]

Grace Travelling Full Circle ~ Romans 11:11-24 ~ 10 July 2016

How easy it is for us to forget the root from which we have come as believers in Israel’s Messiah. How little thought we give to Israel and the promise of her destiny and calling in the history of God’s purpose. How good it is to know that God has not utterly rejected his people but has yet more kindness to show those who have spurned His unfailing love. Sadly, the church historically has often treated the Jews as if they have been totally rejected by God and that we are somehow superior, forgetting that it is only by faith […]

Last Sunday, John outlined for us how Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes (10.4). This week Wayne will preach from Romans 10:5-21. He writes, “This section explains the last part of verse 4: righteousness for everyone who believes. The wonderful gospel that we have is that we do not need to do anything to achieve our own righteousness: Jesus has done all that is necessary to make us righteous – coming down from heaven to live amongst us in the likeness of sinful flesh but without sin, bearing our sin in his body […]

God’s Word Has Not Failed ~ Romans 9:1-29 ~ 12 June 2016

As we embark upon Chapters 9-11 of Romans we will be hearing of God’s righteousness as it has been revealed in the history of Israel, and his future plans for his chosen people. This week, in Romans 9:1-29, Paul expresses his own sorrow and anguish for his unbelieving Jewish kinsfolk. Despite the many privileges they have enjoyed as God’s chosen, covenant people, they have failed to believe the gospel of Christ. Paul vehemently defends the word of God. It is not God who has failed, nor has he been unfaithful to his promises. In fact, Paul argues, Israel’s unbelief follows […]

Are You Sure? ~ Romans 8:31-39 ~ 5 June 2016

We come to the end of Romans 8 this week (8:31-39) where Paul assures us, by sharing his own conviction, that nothing at all can separate us from the love of God in Christ. Do we know this love of God? Are we, like Paul, absolutely sure that nothing can separate us from it? We can be… through him who loved us. This passage not only sums up much of what we have been hearing over the past weeks, it also prepares us for what is to come in the following chapters. If we do not know the love of […]

Sin Is Condemned, We Are Not! ~ Romans 8:1-11 ~ 15 May 2016

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” How good it is to hear these words and to know they speak of us! There is NOT ONE SIN God holds against us, who are in Christ Jesus. This is not because God has turned a blind eye to our sin, or relaxed the demands of his law. No! The righteous requirement of God’s law has been fully met in Christ. And, through our union with him by the Spirit, the requirement of the law has been fulfilled in us also. May the Spirit who dwells […]

The Battle Within ~ Romans 7:7-25 ~ 8 May 2016

In this passage, Paul demolishes any lingering hope that we, out of our own effort and power, could overcome sin and obey God’s law. It shows clearly that no matter how much we want to do what is good we do not have, within ourselves, the power to carry it out. We will see how sin uses God’s good law to bring us into death but in the process it is unmasked by the law for the evil that it is. Paul is not ‘anti-law’, but does show how the law is impotent to deliver us from both the power […]

Released From the Law ~ Romans 7:1-6 ~ 1 May 2016

James Krieg will proclaim God’s Word to us this week from Romans 7:1-6. He writes, “How should we as Christians relate to the Law? In this week’s passage Paul says that we have ‘died to the law’ and been ‘released from the law’ by the death of Christ. This does not mean that it no longer matters how we live; rather, that through Jesus’ atoning death, and our union with him, our relationship to the law has been wonderfully transformed. Once domineering, enslaving and condemning us because of our sin, the law now provides a foundation upon which our lives […]
